FAQ

Scholarships (grants) and education

What are the UWC’s fees?

The full fees for each college are different. The cost of education varies between $16,000 and $54,000 per year. Payments are usually made before the start of the first and the second academic year. There are also needs-based scholarships (grants) available for all successful candidates.

Is there scholarship support available?

Yes. Places are awarded at UWC on the basis of merit and potential, and the initial selection is a ‘needs blind’ process. So we hope that no one is put off from applying for financial reasons. Parents/ guardians of all successful candidates applying for funding assistance must fill out a means-testing form and submit documents confirming their family income. Based on this information the Financial Committee determines an affordable contribution. Scholarships (grants) may cover up to 100% of tuition fees, accommodation and meals for the two-year programme depending on a family’s circumstances.

What does a scholarship cover?

Scholarships awarded to UWC students cover tuition fees, accommodation, board and books. Scholarships do not cover expenses such as travel, visas, health insurance, and pocket money, normally offset by the students’ parents or guardians. We hope therefore that no one is put off from applying for financial reasons.

Will the scholarship pay the student’s airfare to the school?

Most UWC financial support does not cover travel or out-of-pocket expenses. Depending on the assessment of the financial position of the candidate’s family, some UWC colleges may consider each case individually to decide upon the appropriate level of support. Scholarship (grant) funds are limited. Scholarships (grants) are provided to candidates whose financial situation will not cover the full (or partial) cost of tuition.

How are scholarships for UWC educations financed?

Scholarships (grants) are provided either by the colleges or by the national committees. Both collect the necessary financing through fundraising activities. Donors to UWC include philanthropists, private companies, governments and alumni.

What is the duration of scholarships provided to students?

All scholarships are needs-based. The amount of scholarship awarded to each particular candidate is determined by the Financial Committee based on financial documents provided by the candidate’s family. The scholarships are provided for the period of studies at UWC.

Do you provide scholarships to participate in UWC summer programs?

Unfortunately, no. Please check with UWC summer course organizers if there are scholarships available for programme participants.

Academic Programme

What will I be studying?

All UWCs offer the same two-year pre-university programme. Teaching is conducted in English under the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme for students aged 16-19. Read more about the UWC curriculum here.

Can I attend UWC for only one year?

No, the UWC only offers a two-year programme, and you must be present for both years in order to complete it.

Will I be able to go home on vacation?

Yes, most of the students go home for the summer holidays and also during the winter break. If a student is unable to go home, the school will assist them in making arrangements so that they can stay at school or with a host family during the winter break. This can be arranged at the college once you have been accepted.

Where am I going to live during my studies at UWC?

All UWCs are boarding schools, so students not only study on Campus but also live there. Read more about different colleges here.

In every college there are students from 50-90 different countries. A UWC education emphasises experiential learning. The classroom is only one component of that experience, which extends to life together in a residential setting. By sharing dining rooms, common rooms and bedrooms with students from many different cultures and countries, UWC students have opportunities to learn about and share in an international experience that makes a profound and lifelong change in their understanding of one another. Teachers also live on campus, which means boarders always have access to support and care 24 hours a day.

Is the IB diploma accepted in CIS countries?

The IB Diploma is accepted and recognized in most countries, but candidates intent on studying in a particular country must make their own enquiries before applying for or accepting a place at UWC. The colleges do not take responsibility for recognition or lack thereof of the IB Diploma in any particular country. More information is available on the ibo.org website and on individual university websites.

Do Uzbekistan universities accept the IB diploma?

Not all universities in Uzbekistan accept and recognize the IB Diploma. Candidates who intend to study in a particular university must make their own enquiries to find out whether that university accepts IB Diploma or not. More information is available at ibo.org and on the universities’ websites.

If I am accepted, what is the visa process? How can I apply?

Once you are accepted, you will be contacted by the UWC school and they will assist you throughout the visa procedure. Please note that responsibility for visa application process and provision of all necessary documents rests with the candidate’s family; UWC Uzbekistan unfortunately cannot help with applying for a visa.

No.

I am studying in the 10th year, and completed my 9th year exams. For which period should I to submit my academic results? In which language?

You should provide the grades for the last academic year that you completed in full, in this example your 9th year. Documents should be submitted in Uzbek, Russian or English.

No. The application is submitted electronically. You will only be required to turn up in person for the final selection stage.

Military service

Is it possible for military-age students from Uzbekistan to defer their military service while studying at UWC?

Students who have received official confirmation of enrolment to the College/School can request a certificate (from the College/School) confirming their enrollment to the 2-year IB Diploma program. A notarized translation of this certificate (together with other necessary documents – a list of which can be obtained from your local Military Commissariat's office) will need to be submitted to the Military Commissariat office in order for a decision to be made on your deferment of military duty for the period while you are at UWC. Neither UWC Uzbekistan nor UWC Schools and Colleges are able to guarantee the deferment of compulsory military service in Russia.

If, after graduating from a UWC college, a young man receives a university scholarship, can he defer enrollment until completion of military service? Or can the military service be deferred?

Students will have to check with the party offering the scholarship, but, in general, no, scholarships are only valid the year that they are offered. It may be possible to reapply upon completion of the military service, or to defer the military service.
